Hi Friends!
Did you miss me last week? I was home sick, and didn’t make it to work.
Last Thursday I had to go to the doctor. While I was there, I started thinking about how difficult it must be to visit a doctor when you are still learning their language. I decided it would be a good topic to discuss for my next Real Life lesson.
So… here you have it! Your guide to visiting a doctor in the United States! Read through my tips listed below and then check out the discussion that follows!

SET UP AN APPOINTMENTIf you need to see a doctor, the first thing you must do is call your doctor’s office and set up an appointment. Make sure that your insurance covers the cost of your visit. If you don’t have insurance, find out how much it will cost to see the doctor.
AT THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE
After you arrive at the doctor’s office, you will have to check in with the receptionist to let her know you are ready for your appointment. It is a good idea to come a few minutes early. The receptionist will ask you to fill out some paperwork before your appointment begins.
EXPLAIN YOUR SYMPTOMS
When you finally see your doctor, the first thing you need to do is explain what your symptoms are. I had a very bad cold last week, so I told the doctor about my sore throat, non-stop coughing, and the aches in my muscles. You might be at the doctor’s office for any number of reasons, so make sure that you know how to explain what is wrong with you to your doctor.
_EXAMINATION
The doctor will run some tests and examine you to help choose the best way to make you well. Feel free to ask your doctor any questions you may have about the examination.
_DIAGNOSIS
If you have a sickness the doctor can identify when they meet with you they will often give you a presciption for medication before you leave their office. Your doctor will also give you advice on how to get well. If you have to have tests run, you may have to wait until your test results from the lab come back to know what is wrong with you!
