Ex-boyfriends do it. Co-workers do it. Customer service people do it. Apparently, the sound guy and cameraman do it. Sometimes, it seems like your friends do it. You wanted to talk to someone, but they pretended not to hear you. Or, you sent an email complaining about something, and no one ever got back to you. Sometimes, people prefer blowing us off.

When someone blows you off, this means they are ignoring you or avoiding you. Most often, it’s a mystery why people blow you off. Maybe, they are too busy to get back to you. Maybe, they just forgot about your email or text message. Maybe, they just don’t like you and want you to go away. Trying to figure out why someone blows you off is tricky. Maybe, they are just having a bad day and it has nothing to do with you.

The production crew for the movie keep blowing off Andy and Kelsey. Watch as they try to figure out why in today’s English lesson.

Andy_H:  How’s it going? I’m getting ready for my last scene. How’s the sound been? OK….

Kelsey:  Hey! How are things looking today?

Andy_H:  I don’t know, it just seems like everyone’s ignoring me.

Nestor:  Andy!

Kelsey:  I know. They seem to be blowing us off.

Nestor:  Andy! Kelsey! Can we rehearse the scene now?

Andy_H:  I was talking to the sound guy, and he pretended like he didn’t even hear me.

Nestor:  Andy! Kelsey! Just a couple of these lines are tricky. It’d be great to rehearse them.

Kelsey:  I know, I was trying to ask the cameraman a question, and he pretended to not see me. He didn’t even look at me!

Nestor:  Are you seriously blowing me off while complaining about people ignoring you? Andy! Kelsey! We are ready for you.

Andy_H:  Oh! Hey, how’s the directing going? You’re doing that a lot today.

Andy goes up to the sound guy and tries to chat with him. But, the sound guy totally ignores him. Kelsey wants to talk to the cameraman, but the cameraman pretends he doesn’t see her. She seems a little annoyed by this.

Andy and Kelsey start complaining to each other about how everyone is blowing them off. Nestor is trying to get their attention so they can start to rehearse. But now, they are ignoring Nestor. As usual, Nestor puts his head in hands in defeat.

Have you ever been blown off? What did you do about it?

Blowing someone off is very impolite. As a real human, I don’t normally intend to do that unless I consider myself as a robot. If someone does that to you, that person is nothing but a robot or a dog who doesn’t know how to respond.
