Egypt is an incredible country. It is a modern society with an amazing ancient history. Because it is such a famous place, many people travel there. In fact, some people think that it’s too popular. They believe it has become a tourist trap with lots of commercialization. But for others, Egypt represents one of the greatest areas of human history.

Most people are familiar with the Pyramids of Giza. The largest of these is the Great Pyramid, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. For many people, this area in Egypt is a stark contrast to modern life in other countries. Not only is this area mysterious and beautiful, but there are many popular stories about it.

Gary just returned from a trip to Egypt. Find out if Romeo will be the next person to travel there in today’s English lesson.

Gary:  That was an amazing trip.

Romeo:  Oh, that’s right. You went to Egypt.

Gary:  Oh my goodness!

Romeo:  Lucky you!

Gary:  It was such a stark contrast from what life is like here.

Romeo:  Umm… how so?

Gary:  It’s such an ancient experience to go to the pyramids, compared to walking down the street and walking into a local coffee place. It’s amazing! Are you planning on going?

Romeo:  Oh no. I’m not going. I’ve heard that it’s just become a tourist trap, and there’s too much commercialization. If I want that, I could go to Vegas.

Gary:  There’s a KFC a stone’s throw away from the Great Pyramid.

Romeo:  Wow! Why am I not surprised at all?

Gary:  It’s amazing. I came home with this scarab someone gave me, and I didn’t pay for…

Romeo:  A what?

Gary:  A scarab, a little bug.

Romeo:  Oh, OK… I’m not familiar with that.

Gary:  So, it’s this thing. This guy gave it to me, and he yelled at me in Arabic. I don’t know… I don’t know if I’m cursed or what…

Romeo:  You’re going to have to give me 15 feet.

Gary:  OK….

Romeo:  Just saying, man, I don’t want that curse on me.

Gary:  Well, I’ll give this to you as a present for Christmas.

Romeo:  Whoa!

Gary just returned from a trip to Egypt. Romeo tells him he is lucky and asks how Egypt is different to life in the US. Gary says it feels much older and more historic than his normal life. He asks Romeo if he wants to go. However, Romeo isn’t a fan of tourist traps, and he thinks there’s too much commercialization in Egypt today.

Gary tells Romeo about something that happened while he was visiting the Great Pyramid. A man gave him a scarab. Gary didn’t understand why. He was confused, and didn’t pay the man. The man yelled something at him, and now he’s worried that he might be cursed. Romeo is worried, too. He asks Gary to stay 15 feet away from him.

Have you seen any of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World? Do you think it’s possible to be cursed?
