Live long and prosper. Do you know what this means? It’s from a famous American TV series called Star Trek. It’s a special way of saying goodbye to a person you like. If you meet a Trekkie, they might say this to you. Trekkies love everything about Star Trek, both the original and the reboot. Now, Trekkies are excited because there is a new Star Trek movie called Star Trek Beyond.
Star Trek is the story of people in the future. They fly around in space on starships and help other people. The original started in 1966. A very cool thing about the original is that the cast was multiracial. This was one of the first times that a TV series had a multiracial cast. It made Star Trek very popular. Also, people like Star Trek because it’s action-packed. There are 726 episodes of the TV series and 13 movies.
Andy and Brian are talking about the new Star Trek movie. Listen to this English lesson to find out which one of them is a Trekkie!

Andy_H: Star Trek Beyond comes out it in less than a month. I cannot wait!
Brian: That’s the third one of the new reboot series, correct?
Andy_H: It sure is, and I am a Trekkie. Literally, as early as I remember, my parents were watching the show with us. The original, not the reboot. I remember I used to run around the room, pretending I was the USS Enterprise.
Brian: OK. See I’m just now watching the original series. I’m on the third season, so I’m getting to the end of it. I do like those a lot, despite the fact that they’re a little aged and a little slower than a lot of TV shows and entertainment these days. Newer films seem so much quicker, so much action-packed.
Andy_H: A great way to watch the old series is to remember that was the first time in TV history that multiracial people were working together. When you put it in that context, it really makes the show seem more futuristic. But let’s be real. This new Star Trek is the epitome of awesome! It keeps all the ideals, it keeps the characters, and I cannot wait. Do you want to go see the movie with me?
Brian: I’ll go see it with you.
Andy_H: Live long and prosper.

Andy is really excited. On July 22, 2016, the new Star Trek Beyond movie starts playing in theaters. Trekkies all over the world are excited to see this movie, and Andy is a big Trekkie. He watched the original when he was a small child. Starships and aliens are the epitome of cool for a small child, and Andy loved watching the series with his parents.
Brian is now watching the original series. He likes it, but it’s very old and feels aged. Andy reminds Brian that in the 1960s, having a multiracial cast was very exciting and different. But Andy agrees that the new Star Trek is more action-packed than the old ones. Andy and Brian decide to go see the newest reboot together!
Do you watch Star Trek? What new movie do you want to see this summer?
