If you move to a new city for school or work, you’ll likely want to find out where the public library is located. With its massive collection of free books, the library is a great way to save money. You don’t own the books you get from the library, but you can use all the resources and materials found there without paying any money. Just sign up for a library card and then you can reserve books, audio books, movies, and music to take home with you.
Public libraries usually work together with other libraries in the state or country, so even if your local library doesn’t have the book you want, they can probably get it for you! Kids can spend time looking at books and picking out new stories to read. If you’re lucky, there will even be a special reading time for kids each week.
Marni and Jessica visit the library often. Why? Learn more in today’s English lesson about reading.

Marni: Oh, really? A library.
Jessica: Yes. It is absolutely gorgeous. They have a massive, massive collection of books and newspapers, and a play area for kids.
Marni: Wow.
Jessica: It’s incredible.
Marni: You know, I love public libraries. They’re such great resources for so many things. You can get so many great books. If you’re a teacher, you can get massive collections of certain materials for kids. Or just using it as a tool to get books for your family or whatever.
Jessica: Absolutely. Now they have all of these audio-visual resources as well, like audio books. Our library you can reserve audio books, which is really cool.
Marni: You can rent movies. It’s kind of great.
Jessica: I know. I use the library all the time.
Marni: I do, too.
Jessica: I just love it. Well, we’ll have to go to the library together.
Marni: Sounds like a date.
Jessica: Sounds good.

Discussion
Jessica just found the public library, and she’s excited to tell Marni about it. There are lots of cool things about this library, including its many books, newspapers, and area for children to play.
Marni seems impressed but not surprised. She loves libraries. She knows that libraries are a great place for teachers or families to go for materials they don’t have to buy.
Jessica also likes audio books. Sometimes it’s fun to listen to books instead of read them. Marni also mentions that movies are available at the library, too. The two friends plan to visit the library together soon. Who knows what they’ll find?
What’s your library like? How often do you visit the library?
