Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Right now, as you read this lesson, what else are you doing at the same time? You might be checking Facebook, chatting with a friend, shopping, and maybe even trying to get some work or studying done. In the 21st century, nearly everyone multitasks. But it’s hard to say if that means we actually get more done.

Amy is a proud multitasker who believes she can easily do many different things at the same time, and do them well. But Marni is more skeptical of multitasking, and the technology that makes it seem so easy and irresistible. Find out if either of them can convince the other to change her mind.

Dialog

Marni:  Hey Amy, I wanted you to look at this article that I’m reading. There’re some really fascinating points here. Would you take a look at it.

Amy:  Uh-huh. Uh…just…wha…Oh, sorry. I was sending a text.

Marni:  Yeah, I know. I see that. But I really need your attention.

Amy:  Well, I’m paying attention. I mean, I can listen and send a text at the same time. I know how to multitask.

Marni:  Yeah, that’s just it. You know, our society, we’re so obsessed with multitasking. We think we’re getting everything done simultaneously, when really we’re just doing everything in a halfhearted way.

Amy:  I don’t think that’s true. I mean, I just sent a text, I’m updating my relationship status on Facebook right now, and we’re having a pretty deep conversation.

Marni:  Are we? Are we having a deep conversation? Do I really have your attention, or are you more focused on your status update, and the response you’re gonna get?

Amy:  Well, I think that’s just human nature. I mean, even if there weren’t cell phones and smart phones and all that kind of stuff, we would still be thinking about different things at the same time. You know? I think that’s just how it is.

Marni:  Perhaps, but I think that technology is really causing this huge divide in our culture, I really think that what’s gonna help us is if we take some real intentional time to focus on what we’re doing in the present moment.

Amy:  Just don’t take my cell phone away.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni tries to tell Amy about an article she’s reading. But Amy is distracted by the text she’s sending. Marni gets annoyed, but Amy says she can talk and text at the same time. She thinks she is a good multi-tasker.

In Marni’s opinion, people try to do too many things at once and are often distracted by technology. She thinks that we’re so distracted, we don’t do anything well. We need to focus on the present and try to reconnect with those around us.

Do you think you are good at multitasking? Is multitasking a problem, or does it help us get more done in less time?

i can’t do multitasking.  I am so distracted that i can’t focus on my work. so I am sarcastic about the efficiencey of multitasking. I COULD BE halfhearted on my work. i dont want it. however when i am in front of the computer, i cant resist multitasking . i am too obsessed to the computer. so sucks…

I see that we are forgetting a fact . Employers encourage  applicants  an asset  to be ready to tackle  different  works at the same time. How clever they are ,hiring a multi-tasker means that  he/she will have to fill in the post of three employees and get paid  one salary.  sucks.Cry

I think some people do it subconsciously others are more aware when they’re doing it. Just a quick thought. Today’s lesson is the twin sister of last week’s “Juggling act”, but my post won’t be the same. Tongue out

I’ll try to offer a different view on the term, multitasking. Let’s go to the workplace

Multitasking in the  workplace.

My motto :“The more the tasks, the more I get done!”

At work, I tend to procrastinate when I only have one ball to juggle, one lousy task to tackle. I’m not a workaholic by any means, I just think the more I have to do, the busier I get and unscientifically the faster time seems to zip by. The worst days in the office are those on which there aren’t many things to get done, so I’m forced to sit on my laurels, lazy around, daydream and get caught talking to myself. I don’t like to be overwhelmed by tasks but when I’m at work want to, you know… work!. The rush, the phones ringing off the hook, helping another colleague, the unexpected issues that rise all that add color and meaning to my day at work, they make my waking up in early morning worthwhile. Plus, I find my break time to be more valuable after I’ve been buried with tasks; let’s face it, what good is recess when you never were busy? I read somewhere; “a job is something you do, not a place you go to”, and I agree with that very strongly. Keep in mind that multitasking in the working world is a really sought-after skill, so if you need to secure a job and or be a benchmark at your job, one way to do so is to prove you can work effectively under pressure.  But multitasking is no showboating matter, my next lines will explain further.

Some workers give a bad name to the term ‘multitasking’. But first let’s all get on board and agree on a definition for that term, multitasking basically means to carry out multiple tasks at once, preferably by one person. Let’s emphasize on “carry out”, in respect to multitasking it means to successfully complete many tasks, not halfway but to completion. In plain English it means if you are multitasking in doing assignment A and B your goal or what is expected from you is to complete both in an effective fashion. Multitasking at work isn’t shuffling through a bunch of files and pretends to be busy, it is getting things done. Multitasking is only impressing when the outcome conveys to your employer that you have a sense for quick judgment and time managing skill. Sure, you want to impress your employer and get that promotion and draw ire from your co-worker, but how much can I handle? That’s the question you need to dwell on. You need to know your limits and abilities before you commence a cluster of tasks. Be rational and tell yourself or your boss “I can’t handle such workload when the bomb is ticking, I’d need more time or some assistance”, believe me by doing so you’ll save yourself from a lot trouble and most importantly save the company valuable time. Multitasking at work isn’t trying to deal with many activities at once, it is a self-imposed commitment you can’t afford not to respect and fulfill, because if you don’t you are wasting time and you’re putting your credibility and job security  in peril. Multitasking can have a negative and costly outcome when done improperly.

Multitasking is a skill, it’s a way of life, but for the rest of us who don’t have that impulse, rest assured it is a habit that can be acquired with practice, time and with a good individual understanding of the tasks you’re subjected to.  It’s a mastery of the daily work in a sense. It’s definitely not time wasting. : )

 > > Beatrice, Thanks for the terms.  I’m a polychronic and I know it.

I think some simple thinks can be done at the same time. I generally do some housework while watching tv: ironing, darning…

I also have to multitask at work, but I agree with Marni . I don’t think we can do perfectly many things at the same time. multitasking may help us make things done but they wouldn’t be done as perfectly as they would if we focussed all our attention on it.

if I was having a surgery I would be more relieved if the surgeon is not phoning his wife at the same timeLaughing

I don’t think I am good at multitasking.I like to do something and to listen to music simultaneously. In fact, when I do the work I can’t hear the music.I can only focus on one thing at the same time.
