Curtis: Shaun you got it right; we’ll find out who the winner is in November but before then Trump is going to receive more flack.

Dee Dee: Girlfriend has a pass with all of the drama going down with Donald but it’s still too early for her to take a victory lap.

Dee Dee: Hillary has a benefit from all of the drama happening with Donald but it’s too early for her to celebrate the victory.

Sheila: Trump has pulled out all the stops and has taken shooting from the hip to new level.

Sheila: Trump has crossed all red lines and taken it to a whole new level.

Shaun: Yeah, one of his accusers said that he was straight up bullying.

Shaun: Yeah, one of his accusers said that he was bullying the others directly.

Curtis: If the Donald keeps this up, Hillary may have a slam dunk in November.

Curtis: If Donald keeps acting this way, Hillary will be the President in November.

Dee Dee: If Trump loses, he may go off emotionally; it doesn’t matter, he can fly his bird out of Dodge.

Dee Dee: If Trump loses, he may get angry with people; but he can keep away from trouble.

Sheila: Even after he’s out of Dodge, his so-called party has more than enough mess to clean up.

Sheila: Even after he’s out of trouble, his what supposed to be his party has a lot of mess to clean up.

Shaun: Yeah, forever and a day!

Shaun: Yeah, it’s going to take a very long while.

Mr. Alston : this was my take on the last lesson. A very tough one. Needless to say, it was very difficult for non-native speakers of the English language

Part 1 was posted on September 29, 2016, if you’d like to read it please scroll back to that date for Lesson No. 83.

The conversation continues on the topic of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton between a few native speakers using everyday conversation English, most of which were taken directly from watching CNN.

Note: This phrase is from the root phrase “wait for the other shoe to drop.”

Justina, the way you used the phrases from the lesson are exactly correct; good job!

Now add this information to your English knowledge and add more. If you do, eventually you’ll achieve a higher level of understanding how native-speakers speak.

Thank you Alston,

In Eurovision song Contest it’s been knock down drag out fight between Russia and Sweden.

Yesterday between two boys the gloves has been of from Jump street. From the get-go they’ve been saying everything at each other including the kitchen sink.

After car accident I decide hanging tough in Olympic Games, all my family have me back and I’ am not backing down.

My father throwing me under the bus left and right after divorce with my mother.

Could you check these sentences, I don’t know if I understand the meanings.

Lesson No. 83 Explanation of A Native Speaker’s Private Conversation:

Justina, you gave a good effort in re-writing the lesson and did a good job. The highlighted words in italics give the meaning of the original text above it.

The degree that native speakers deviate from Standard English depends on the person speaking. However, it is common practice among most native speakers to use idioms, phrases, and slang. This can make it difficult to understand the meaning of conversational English without instruction or first-hand experience. Nevertheless, it is possible to learn this level of English through your own personal study with persistence and a will to learn.

Shaun - Well, it’s been a knock down drag out fight up until now between the Donald and Hillary.

Shaun- It’s been an intense fight from the beginning of the campaign until now.

Curtis - Yeah, the gloves have been off from Jump Street. From the get-go, they’ve been throwing everything at each other including the kitchen sink.

Curtis- Yes, courtesy has been abandoned from the beginning. From the starting point they’ve been saying unkind things to each other without restraint.

Dee Dee: YepGirlfriend have been hanging tough, President Obama and Bill have her back and she’s not backing down.

Dee Dee  YesHillary has been accepting the challenge, President Obama and Bill has been protecting her and she’s not quitting.

Sheila  Trump has been throwing folks under the bus left and right but his words are coming back to haunt him.

Sheila- Trump has been abandoning people frequently and his words are coming back to embarrass him.

Shaun - On the first debate, Hillary baited him on a rabbit trail having him go where he should not have gone. Then she gave him a one-two punch in response to his question as to where she was the last few days before the debate.

Shaun- During the first debate, Hillary tricked him to talk on things that he could have refused. Then she gave a good answer when asked where she was before the debate.

Curtis - And then hung him out to dry by saying she was preparing for the debate and she is also preparing to be president!

Curtis- Then she embarrassed him by saying that she spent the time preparing for the debate instead of campaigning, and she is also preparing to be president (implying that he isn’t preparing to be president.)

Dee Dee You haven’t seen nothing yet, wait until the next debate; she’ll make mince meat out of himGirlfriend can debate until the cows come home.

Dee Dee- The best is yet to come, just wait until the next debate and she will be victoriousHillary has the ability to debate for a long time.

Sheila: Another thing, he has no back up from his own party and they’re jumping ship already.

Sheila- Also, Donald has no support from his own party and they’re abandoning him now.

Shaun - We’ll see in November what the deal is.

Shaun- We will see in November who is the winner (the results.)

If anyone have any misunderstanding or questions, please feel free to ask.

I’m thinking about writing a part-two to this lesson because of the new drama coming from the campaigning of Donald and Hillary. Let me know what you think about it.

Welcome 5timemommy, below is a detailed explanation of the phrase “Heavy on the young” that was previously posted.

In the U.S., if you order food from a restaurant like a hamburger, fish sandwich etc. and you want to request extra condiments such as ketchup or tartar sauce, you would say “heavy ketchup” or “heavy tartar sauce” and the cook would put extra sauce on your sandwich.

In the dialogue, one old man said to the other old man, “how’s it going, young man?”  He asked him in a friendly fun-type of a way how was he doing today, even though he wasn’t a young man but asked him as a joke.

The other older man responded, “Heavy on the young,” which he meant jokingly, keep telling me I’m young, young, young (heavy=extra)!  In other words, he wanted the greeter to put emphasis on the “young” part of his greeting.

This is in the category of fun language between people you are comfortable with. It is not the common language but I want to expose you to it so you won’t always think in a literal sense.

This example is the same as a husband asking his wife to do a favor for him and she responds, “yes sir” and he responds with the phrase “Heavy on the Sir” and she responds again in a loud voice “YES SIR!” to add emphasis to the affirmation of “yes sir.”

It’s just an example of having fun with the language.

Amira, you knocked the ball so far out of the ballpark that it was spotted on radar falling out of orbit! I’m so proud of you to paraphrase the lesson in this fashion. Congratulations.

With that being said, I still want to encourage others who may be working on their paraphrase to post it. If there are any questions about the dialogue, please ask.

I’ll write an explanation a little later to add any additional comments but it will not differ much from what has been posted.

Hi Mr. Alston,

Shaun - Well, it’s been a knock down drag out fight up until now between the Donald and Hillary.

Shaun: Well, it’s been a strong competition between Donald and Hillary till now.

Curtis - Yeah, the gloves have been off from Jump Street. From the get-go they’ve been throwing everything at each other including the kitchen sink.

Curtis: Yes, the competition has been tough from the very beginning. They have been holding nothing back since they started.

Dee Dee - Yep. Girlfriend has been hanging tough, President Obama and Bill has her back and she’s not backing down.

Dee Dee: Yes. Hillary has been tough, President Obama and Bill are supporting her and she’s not giving up.

Sheila - Trump has been throwing folks under the bus left and right but his words are coming back to haunt him.

Sheila: Trump has been sacrificing his friends and allies, but his words and doings are reversing on him.

Shaun - On the first debate, Hillary baited him on a rabbit trail having him go where he should not have gone. Then she gave him a one-two punch in response to his question as to where she was the last few days before the debate.

Shaun: Hillary beat him hard at the debate. Then answered his question about where she was the last few days before the debate fiercely.

Curtis - And then hung him out to dry by saying she was preparing for the debate and she is also preparing to be president!

Curtis: And added that she was preparing for the debate and also to be President!

Dee Dee - You haven’t seen nothing yet, wait until the next debate; she’ll make mince meat out of him. Girlfriend can debate until the cows come home.

Dee Dee: Wait till the next debate, she will beat him even harder. She’s very good at debating.

Sheila - Another thing, he has no back up from his own party and they’re jumping ship already.

Sheila: Another thing, Trump is not supported by his own party and they are all abandoning him.

Shaun - We’ll see in November what the deal is.

Shaun: we will see in November what happens.

Hello Bella, that is a good question you’ve asked.

The internet is your friend to locate idioms and slang phrases of which English is full of them.

Specifically, here is a website that define words not usually found in traditional dictionaries:

http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/

Also, use a search engine such as Google for any phrase that you want the meaning of.

This type of wording is weaved seamlessly into standard English. This is the value of the Englishbaby website and native-speaking English teachers to reveal non-standard English.

Lesson No. 83 – Inside a native-speaker’s private conversation:

A few native speakers were talking at home about the political battle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The following is everyday conversational English.

Shaun - Well, it’s been a knock down drag out fight up until now between the Donald and Hillary.

Curtis - Yeah, the gloves have been off from Jump Street. From the get-go they’ve been throwing everything at each other including the kitchen sink.

Dee Dee - Yep. Girlfriend has been hanging tough, President Obama and Bill has her back and she’s not backing down.

Sheila - Another thing, he has no back up from his own party and they’re jumping ship already.

Shaun - We’ll see in November what the deal is.

Question:

Do you understand this conversation?

Try to paraphrase (re-write) this conversation.

Note: It would be helpful to watch a re-run of the debate on the internet or read an analysis about the debate.

Lesson No. 82 – The Importance of the Comma Explanation

I’m back from promoting my eBook, thanks for your patience and now on with the show.

Purpose of the comma:

The use of a comma is quite extensive and in order to write this explanation in a brief fashion, I will limit the description of the comma as it relates to this lesson. You can do your research for additional functions of the comma on the internet.

Please scroll down to read Lesson 82 that was posted on August 26, 2016.

Repeat of the Question:

This statement can be interpreted as yes and no to return the car to the dealership by the placement of the comma (after No way.) Can you tell which sentence is yes and no?

A. No way we’ll take it back to the dealership.

B. No way, we’ll take it back to the dealership.

In item A without a comma after No way the statement is continuous and means that they will not take the car back to the dealership.

In item B with a comma after No way, the comma separates two thoughts. “No way” here means they will not pay the $200 for the independent shop to repair the car, but instead will take the car back to the dealership.

To better understand this explanation, consider looking at it from another perspective.Let’s separate the two thoughts with a period:1. No way. (we reject the price quote of the independent shop)2. We will take the car back to the dealer.

I hope you can see the difference between writing with and without the comma. It totally changes the meaning.

The comma attempts to duplicate the pause between words in spoken English. In spoken English, you have various items that combine to show the emotion of the speaker such as facial expression, body movement, intonation, volume, and tone.

The only way to show emotion in written English is punctuation (commas, periods, exclamation and question marks) and additional wording.

Remember this information combined with context to understand the intent of the speaker.

Hi there, again!

The Yes in A  referred to the meaning of ‘No way we take it back to the dealership’ without the comma. After being asked by Anna, Scott’s answer was definitely an acceptance considering that they felt screwed by the dealership.

The NO in B then referred to the meaning of ‘No way, we take it back to the dealership’ with an added comma. Again, after Anna inquired about Scott’s opinion, he expressed rejection for paying the 200$ to an independent auto shop. He preferred the car dealer instead.

Hello Mr. Alston and english baby community!

Explination has already been said; the sentence with the comma after “no way” is already a complete negative answer:

“No way, we´ll take it back to the dealership” - No way we´ll pay the 200 fee, we´re gonna take it back to the dealership.

While not having a comma is a continuos answer:

“No way we´ll take it back to the dealership” – There´s no way we´re gonna take it back to the dealership, we´ll pay the $200 fee to the oldschool mechanic.
