When the sky is blue and the sun is shining, British people like to get out into the open air. In particular they like to go to the seaside for their ideal day out. According to a new nationwide survey two thirds of all the children and nearly half of the adults in the survey put going to the seaside at the top of a list of things they would like to do on a sunny day in summer.

Walks and drives in the country are favourite alternatives for adults.Children, however, prefer going to sports events, seeing friends or going on a trip to London.

A third of the children like the idea of a country walk or going to safari park or zoo, but only one in ten put it as their favourite activity. Not surprisingly, visiting stately homes in more popular with adults then children. Almost one in five adults enjoys visiting stately homes.

What makes a day out enjoyable for many children and adults too, is an ice cream or lolly. This is especially true for children for over half of them prefer ice cream to soft drinks, fish and chips, hamburgers, sweet and chocolates.

For most youngsters the attraction of ice cream is that it is refreshing and tastes good. More than three quarters say that these are the things they like most about it.

Not surprisingly the majority of adults put visiting the pub for a drink top of their day out enjoyment, although they also like ice cream and the same reasons as children.

Nearly three out of ten family outings in the summer involve journeys of more than 50 miles. Most families on a day out set off before 11 a.m but some get started before 9 a.m. The majority return home after 6 p.m.
