Is there something about your appearance that you would like to change? Would you like to have a smaller nose, fuller lips, bigger muscles, or longer legs?

Certainly, people should accept themselves as they are. But more and more people, driven by the desire to be physically perfect, are ready to go under the knife to improve their appearance. And with the high cost of cosmetic surgery in countries like the U.S., U.K and Germany, people are seeking out alternative, more affordable places to have the procedures done.

Listen to Kevin and Amanda talk about medical tourism. Then watch a video showing how Michael Jackson’s appearance has changed over the years as result of numerous cosmetic operations.

Amanda

Kevin:  So, I’ve been reading recently about all these people doing this, like, medical tourism, where they go to Thailand for, you know, nose jobs, different kinds of transplants, a lot of cosmetic surgery. Have you heard about this?

Amanda:  I’ve heard a ton about that, and it’s interesting – to save a buck! – how they’ll gamble with their health.

Kevin:  Yeah, what do you think about it?

Amanda:  Um, well, for the cosmetic surgery, there’s so many risks associated with those, ah, depending on what you have done. I’m not sure that I would gamble with my health and have a botched plastic surgery procedure done for, say, $500, which sometimes that’s what it costs when it should cost $5,000.

Kevin:  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Amanda:  And then you fly back home thinking la-dee-da, no problem. And then you have an infection!

Kevin:  I actually know someone who went to Vietnam and had a very cheap nose job, and it went bad. But, I do know because I’ve spent a lot of time in Thailand, and I do know that Thailand actually has world-class cosmetic surgery places…

Amanda:  I did not know that.

Kevin:  ...and it’s just as good as getting it in the U.S., for a fraction of the price, and you can get a first-class ticket and stay in a five-star hotel.

Amanda:  So why is it that Thailand is different than the other countries? Is it the facilities, or the…?

Kevin:  Well, I think more than anything it’s the facilities. I mean, Thailand, by far, has the nicest medical facilities in Southeast Asia.

Amanda:  Okay.

Kevin:  Um, there’s just a lot more wealth there, especially in Bangkok, you know.

Amanda:  Right.

Kevin:  There’s a large foreign population that demands that.

Discussion

Medical tourism, which involves traveling to other countries for cheaper medical procedures, is becoming more and more popular. Countries such as Thailand, Brazil, India and Singapore promote themselves as destinations for people who want to have medical procedures done at a fraction of the price they would pay in their home countries.

Many programs offer package deals which include specific medical procedures, round-trip airfare and hotel. They promote medical tourism as a vacation of self-improvement, where you can have surgery and then relax on the beach while you recover.

What do you think about cosmetic surgery? Would you feel comfortable traveling to another country for a medical procedure?
