Quote

1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“I play Beethoven and Bach. At the same time, Biggie is my dog.”
- Alicia Keys, singer, talking about her musical influences.

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

friend, person you respect
(When Alicia calls Biggie her dog, she’s talking about the Notorious B.I.G. – a famous rapper. So, essentially what she’s saying is that she loves both classical music and rap. Her love of both of those kinds of music is what makes her so unique and so wonderful.)

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

Dog” is a difficult term to know how to use. It would be very easy to use it in the wrong way, so please be careful. The most important thing to remember is that it’s very informal, so it can only be used among friends. You would NEVER want to call a teacher or business associate your “dog.”
People most often use “dog” to refer to their friends, especially when greeting them. “What’s up dog?” is one of the most common uses of the term.
If you’re in a U.S. city, you’ll probably hear people use “dog” a lot. It’s much more popular with the urban city crowd than with people from smaller towns.

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

””What’s up dog? How ya livin’? What have you been up to?”“

””Jeff is my dog. I love that guy. He’s one of the nicest guys I know.”“

””I was out with my _dog_s last night. We went to a couple of bars and then to a dance club.”“

””Where are you going dog? I thought you were going to hang out with us today. Do you have something better to do?”“
