You belong with me

Last night I was listening to the song “you belong wit me” by Taylor Swift. Now, I know the meaning of the expression “you belong to me”; but I’m not sure about the meaning of “you belong with me”.

Could you please tell me the difference in meanings?

Best regards,

Abhishek

You belong “to” me implies ownership; one person feels as if he or she owns another. You belong “with” me means that the two of you are meant to be together, but one person doesn’t feel that he or she owns another.

Best,
