You can use “down side” to describe the negative part of anything. It can be used relative to a situation, an object, a relationship, or just about anything else you can think of. For example, if you decide to go to college in a city that’s far away from your home, you could say that you’re very excited about going to school, but that the “down side” is that you’ll be very far away from your family. Or, if you get a new MP3 player, you could say that you love the MP3 player, but the “down side” is that it doesn’t have a radio. About a person, you could say that you really enjoy your relationship, but the “down side” is that s/he never keeps your secrets.
