The main festivals here (Sri Lanka) are the Sinhala (Avurudha) and Tamil Hindu New Year day in April, and Wesak in May to remember the birth, the incarnation, and the death of the Buddha. There isn’t any spring here because it is somewhat evenly hot the year around. Of course, there is a dry season and the monsoon (rainy) season. The Sinhala Buddhist and the Tamil Hindu New Year Day has something to do with the annual movement of the sun in relation to the stars. People go back to their home towns and villages, wear new cloths, play traditional games, light fireworks, etc. Everything is done according to times fixed by astrologers. They boil milk, eat kiriabath (rice cooked in coconut milk), bathe, and rub oil at special designated times.
The main Buddhist festival is Wesak, the day of the Buddha's birth, his incarnation under the Bo tree, and his death. There are a lot of decorations put up everywhere on that day.
