The German newspaper ‘Reutlinger Nachrichten’ says that each year 100.000.000 sharks and sting rays die due to the fishing industry. Most of these animals fall victim to tuna fishing ships when they get caught in their nets. Also mud sharks despite their status being vulnerable can legally be sold in Germany under fake names as nobody would eat the meat of a species that’s listed as vulnerable. So instead of calling this mud shark or mud shark meat some suppliers call it ‘Schillerlocke’ (Schiller’s lock) or ‘Seeaal’ (marine eel). Also in Germany you won’t find any warning sign on the packaging that the meat of sharks or sting rays often is highly contaminated with quicksilver.

‘Partei Mensch Umwelt Tierschutz’ says that shark squalene – an oil won from the liver of sharks – has been used as the main ingredient in some adjuvants to boost efficacy in vaccines. Now there is hope that this oil could also improve the efficiency of a vaccine against COVID-19. Some argue that squalene could also be won from some plants making it unnecessary to kill sharks for this medicine. But this method that involves the killing of sharks just is the least expensive.

>The German newspaper “Dein Spiegel” says that in Nienburg (Lower-Saxony /Germany) a new initiative was founded called “Besserfleisch”. Member-farmers who raise animals to slaughter them let the animal live until they found buyers for every part of the animal: for example a museum that will buy the organs of a fish, a supermarket that will buy its meat, an enterprise that will turn the rest into fertilizer.
>The German newspaper “Dein Spiegel” says that in Berlin (Brandenburg /Germany) the “Restlos glücklich e.V.” now opened a new restaurant. There only food that regular supermarkets and restaurants are not allowed to sell in Germany shall be turned into edible meals. Some of the ingredients they use for example were too small, didn’t have the right shape, were sent to the wrong supermarket or – in the case of fish for example – were about to reach their best before date.
